- Participants with any level of financial understanding are welcome; they should arrive curious, committed, and ready to learn!
Description:
Effective nonprofit leadership begins with sound financial knowledge, and the Finance Lab delivers it in a practical, accessible way. This five‑month, a‑la‑carte training series designed to elevate the financial literacy of nonprofit leaders across Summit County is offered free to all Summit Foundation grantees. Participants may attend individual sessions or the full series; however, each session intentionally builds on the concepts introduced in prior months to support cumulative learning and deeper skill development. The curriculum is geared toward an introductory to intermediate level, making it accessible to those newer to nonprofit finance while still offering meaningful depth for more experienced participants. Every session is led by Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) who bring practical expertise, real‑world examples, and a clear, jargon‑free teaching style.
Through interactive instruction, hands‑on exercises, and peer learning, participants will strengthen their ability to interpret financial information, engage in strategic financial discussions, and make informed decisions that support organizational health.
Each 3‑hour session includes:
- Welcome, Introductions & Framing (15 min)
- Core Presentation (75 min)
- Small Group Work (30 min)
- Applied Learning / Case Studies (45 min)
- Wrap‑Up & Next Steps (15 min)
Goals:
By the end of the series, participants will:
- A solid grounding in nonprofit financial fundamentals
- Increased confidence reading and using financial statements
- Tools for budgeting, forecasting, and cash‑flow planning
- A shared financial vocabulary for staff–board collaboration
- Practical templates and resources to apply immediately
- A supportive network of fellow Summit Foundation grantees
